"Invest in yourself
Substance abuse, misuse, and addiction are very real issues affecting Canadians everyday. Whether it's an internet addiction, drinking, gambling, prescription drugs, food/eating/over-eating/anorexia/bulimia, relationships, codependency, relapse prevention, video games, cell phones, social media, pornography, etc. You may find yourself struggling to cope with daily living because of the impact of your addiction and how it has interfered with your life. Your life seems to revolve around getting your "fix."
Many, regular, everyday people, are trying to cope with their addiction, striving to live healthier lives by abstaining from the self-destructive behaviours which result in the devastating spiraling effects of an addiction.
There is hope, and there is help available. We are available to help you, Monday to Friday 10 am to 10 pm with an office in Welland.
Do you find yourself using drugs, alcohol, or food to help you cope with life?
At Niagara Counselling Services, we assess addictions and substance abuse from a biopsychosocial approach. This approach encompasses all aspects of life which may contribute to helping you maintain a clean and sober life. The approach looks at your physical and mental health, and the environment and people with which you surround yourself. We take these aspects into consideration and develop a coping strategy with you to keep you safe from "triggers."
For many individuals, the addiction provides a short term escape from life, and is often used to help deal with anxiety and depression. Substance abuse and addictions are associated with the pleasure centers in our brain, and engaging in addictive activities produces chemicals that bring relief and a temporary feeling of satisfaction. Dopamine, the main neurotransmitter produced in the brain, results in feeling "high" and elated. It is considered the "reward" chemical. It's the chemical released when we fall in love. When an individual feels depressed or low, the body doesn't naturally produce these chemicals, so you might seek these addictive activities because they stimulate the brain in ways that feel good.
It is not just the person who has the addiction who suffers. It's their family, friends, and partners. We counsel individuals and families dealing with addiction, acting as a vehicle of strength, support and encouragement. With a skilled counsellor, you can begin to look at the underlying causes and issues surrounding your addiction, and together, we can develop an appropriate and effective relapse prevention plan that works for you. We understand your emotional needs, and help you find healthier ways to manage your life.
We also address issues of Codependency as an Addiction, also known as Codependent Personality.
We are here to assist you in reaching your true potential.
The Key to Healing is Talking about It.
