Parenting in the 21st Century.

Picture
Being a parent or a caregiver to children or youth of today can feel frustrating! In the age of information and internet, as parents, as caregivers, which is the best way? How do I ensure my child grows up in the best environment? Am I making the right decisions for my children's future? Am I doing this right?

There are many questions that don't always come with black and white answers.

Among the sea of information and advice available online--it's easy to get caught up in what really works to keep our kids on the right track and engaged in healthy activities and peer groups. School's don't necessarily accommodate or provide the social services which offer optimum benefits, nor do they have counsellors available every day for consultation and support.

A Child and Youth Practitioner, counsellor, social worker, or psychotherapist can act as someone who will mentor your child, who will provide your child or adolescent with activities, methods, and strategies to keep them positive and motivated to build their resilience skills so that they will be better at weathering the storms of peer-pressure, bullying, and other life issues.

In addition to the individual services provided by a professional counsellor, Niagara Counselling Services employs Child and Youth Counsellors who plan, implement, and facilitate fun and enjoyable programming in group settings. These types of social skills groups are excellent for building new relationships, practicing and leaning new skills, and developing a stronger sense of self-esteem.

Child and Youth Counselling.

Children and youth react strongly to the environments in which they are nurtured. Family life has a huge impact on how children are socialized, and in turn, how their behaviour and attitudes are reflected back to us.

A child who is depressed or experiencing problems will show signs or changes in eating, sleeping, school, irritability, lack of personal safety and boundaries, recklessness, alcohol or substance abuse. Often, they will lack the self-esteem and confidence to be able to develop accordingly and appropriately for their age.

Children don't typically talk about their problems, but demonstrate and provide indicators and deeper understanding of issues through their artwork and while engaged in play.

A professional counsellor can engage your child or youth in what's often called "play therapy," they will be able to help guide you and provide insight as to the underlying reasons for your child's unpredictable behaviour.
